Jammu district derives its name from the city Jammu which is the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir. The city is home to some of the most popular Hindu shrines of Hindu and is referred to as “The city of temples”. The District is bounded in the north and north east by the Tehsils of Reasi in Udhampur district in the east and south east partly by tehsil Ramnagar of Udhampur district and partly by tehsil Billawar of Kathua district,in the south and south west by Kathuadistrict and Sialkote district of Rawalpindi (Pak) and in the north west by Tehsil Nowshara of district Rajouri and parts of the district Bhimber now under the occupation of Pakistan.

District Jammu falls in sub-mountainous region at the foothills of the Himalayas. Shivalik range rises gradually in the north part of the district and merges with the Indo-Gangetic plains in the south. Jammu city is at an elevation of 1030 feet above the sea level.

The city was originally founded by Raja Jamboo Lochan who lived in 14th century BC. According to legend, Raja Jamboo Lochan had once gone out for hunting when he saw a tiger and a goat drinking water at the same pond. This strange phenomenon impressed him and he decided to build a city at this site so that the strong and weak could live together in peace and mutual tolerance. He founded the city by his own name "Jamboo" but with the passage of time and due to its frequent use, the pronunciation got slightly distorted and the city came to be known as 'Jammu'.

Jammu district is famous for its holy shrine of Mata Vaishnodeviji near Katra which is visited by millions of tourists every year. Other worth visiting places in the district include Kud, Patnitop, Sanasar, Batote, Sudh Mahadev, Gauri Kund, Mantalai, Mansar Lake, Surinsar Lake, Shiv Khori, Dera Baba Banda, Purmandal, Krimchi, Jajjar Kotli, Akhnoor andBaba Dhansar.

Jammu city is the district head quarter of the Jammu district and is well connected by air, rail and road. The city has an airport and regular flights run between Jammu and several other cities of the country.

Jammu Tawi is an important rail head of the state of J & K and is connected with important towns and cities of the country by express and super fast trains. Jammu Tawi to Kanyakumari is the longest rail route of the country that touches some of the important cities of the country.

You can also reach the city by road. National Highway 1A runs through Jammu district connecting the rest of the state including the summer capital Srinagar.
