Udhampur District : Jammu & Kashmir

Udhampur is located between 32°-34' to 39°-30' North latitude and 74°-16' to 75°-38' East longitude. It is located in the southeastern part of the state and is surrounded by Rajouri district in the west, Anantnag in the north, Doda district in the northeast, Kathua district in the southeast and Jammu district in the southwest. The district has a great variation in climate due to variation in altitude. The area is characterized by occasional snowfall and severe cold in winter.

The district head quarter is located in the same town of Udhampur and is named after Raja Udham Singh, the eldest son of Raja Gulab Singh. A sizeable population of the district follows Hinduism. There are a large number of nomadic Gujjar's and Bakarwal's present in the district. The major languages spoken here are Dogri, Hindi, Urdu, and Kashmiri. The Vaishno Devi shrine is a very important shrine for the Hindus and the most famous tourist attraction of this district. Udhampur is also an important military cantonment of the district.
